Algebra 2 is the class that separates the adults from the children. It is the class that shows what you are made of. Can you work at something until you get it or will you give up because it is hard? Are you willing to break a sweat and put your back into learning something that you never expect to use in your daily life, just because it is required?
Why are colleges so intent on students having Algebra 2 if people don't really use it once they finish school? Why does the SAT focus on English and Math skills? What is it about Algebra 2 that makes it so important to colleges?
San Diego State, among other colleges and universities, requires incoming students to meet the Entry Level Math requirement by getting a high enough score in the math section of the SAT/ACT, scoring a 3 or better in AP Calculus, by passing the special section on the STAR Algebra 2 test, by having transfer credits from another school or by taking the ELM test they offer. Students have to pass the requirement before they can enroll in any math classes at the university. Oh, and calculators are not permitted.
Why is algebra so important? What is it about algebra that cause colleges put so much emphasis on it?
This year we intend to answer these questions and the quote at the top of the page is your first hint. To pass this class will require hard work and dedication. You will have to be tenacious.
If you don't understand a lesson,
and... DON'T GIVE UP UNTIL YOU GET IT!
The human mind has never invented
a labor-saving machine equal to algebra.
