"You have brains in your head.
You have feet in your shoes.
You can steer yourself
Any direction you choose."

(from Oh, the Places You'll Go!
by Dr. Seuss)

All of the staff and students at Campo Elementary are committed to practicing good character traits.  These monthly traits will be highlighted and integrated into our character education lessons and in our Peaceful Playground program.  Classes will read books, participate in lessons, and produce special projects related to the "word of the month."  The following words are scheduled to be taught:

Month
Character Word
August/September
Courtesy
October
Honesty
November
Appreciation
December
Respect
January
Initiative
February
Responsibility
March
Self-Discipline
April
Commitment
May/June
Cooperation/Success

The staff brainstormed several interesting activities that might be used to teach these words each month:

üDuring monthly or weekly assemblies, the class(es) highlighting the character word can do a skit, song, poem, or “whatever” in front of the school.
ü
When giving out Caught Being Good (individual or classroom) certificates, students are recognized by the character word. Example: You were caught being good by showing empathy to Bobby Joe when he fell and hurt himself.
ü
The word of the month should be put on our marquee.  Although the teacher in charge of the word may not have time to put the word up, it is his/her responsibility to ask a parent or aide to make sure it is done.
ü
For our monthly award assembly, dedicate one of your certificates that highlights the character word to one student in your room.
ü
Our Principal, Mrs. Yops, will discuss good character traits during our morning message.
ü
Make a banner or poster to put around the school.  It could be the class doing the word of the month or all classes may participate (posters could be put in the cafeteria for all to see).
ü
Read aloud literature
which emphasizes the word of the month.
ü
Tell your parents in a monthly newsletter what the word of the month is.
ü
Homework
assignment:  My family shows “respect” by…
ü
Put the word of the month on our website.
ü
As we get into character education, please share any new ideas you may come across.

If you want to do a search on Google, type the keywords character education and you will see a huge list of websites.
